Dheeraj Pandey, Nutanix CEONutanix, the enterprise cloud computing firm, has been named as the leader in Gartner’s new Magic Quadrant for Hyperconverged Infrastructure.
Others in the leaders quadrant include Dell EMC, HPE, and VMware. Nutanix and Dell (itself an OEM partner of Nutanix) now control 84.25% of the HCI market, according to the IDC.
IDC said hyperconverged systems is now a $1 billion market, and Dell commands a 30.6% share (at $306.8 million) ahead of Nutanix at 207.4 million.
Dheeraj Pandey, co-founder and CEO, said he believed Gartner’s assessment of the HCI space comes at a key inflection point in the market.
He said it was seeing enterprises of sizes, and across all industries, embracing its HCI solution as a fundamental element of their multi-cloud architectures.
Customers were free to build their infrastructure, run their applications, and choose their cloud platform, ‘all on their terms, not a vendor’s lock-in agenda’.
“We believe long-term market leadership starts with this freedom.”
Nutanix reported strong results in fiscal Q1 2018, with billings at $315.3 million and revenue of $275.6 million. It now has over 7 800 global customers.
On a recent earnings call Pandey said that its ‘thoughtful adoption’ of a software-centric approach in their go-to-market strategy was paying off. It believes it offers customers greater flexibility, who can now have a separate discussion with hardware vendors.
It said as its architecture matured, it had relaxed its opinion on hardware, and signed OEM relationships.
It said its software-only form factor enabled ‘friction-free’ access to its technology, and would also change the quote-to-cash process, sales compensation and software downloads, among other things.
